The EGC Stormgate Open is the first prized tournament for Stormgate. Played during the game's 2024 Steam Next Fest event, which was open to the public.

Format[edit]

Open Qualifiers [showhide]

Capped at 512 players.
Eight players qualify.
Split into two Stages.
Stage 1 (Saturday 10th).
- Double-Elimination Bracket.
- Players are split into 8 pools.
- The first map is always Broken Crown.
- In Bo3 is loser's pick after first map.
- Upper Bracket Rounds of 512 & 256 are Bo1.
- Upper Bracket Rounds of 128 onwards are Bo3.
- Lower Bracket Rounds of 256 to 128 are Bo1.
- Lower Bracket Rounds of 64 onwards are Bo3.
- 4 Upper & lower players from each pool advance to Stage 2.
Stage 2 (Sunday 11th).
- Single-Elimination Bracket.
- All 64 players are in the same pool.
- The first map is always Jagged Maw.
- loser's pick after first map.
- All matches are Bo3.
- Top 8 players advance to the Playoffs.

Katowice Qualifiers [showhide]

Played on Friday 16th.
Round Robin Group Stage

Playoffs

Single-elimination bracket.
Players qualified via the ranked ladder are seeds 1st to 4th.
The Top 2 players by ranked ladder qualified via the Open Qualifiers, are seeds 5th to 6th.
The Top 2 players from the Katowice Qualifiers, are seeds 7th to 8th.
The rest of the players are seeds 9th to 16th.
Player take turns vetoing one map each, the last map remaining is the first map played in the series.
Day 1 (Saturday 17th).
- Round of 16 matches are Bo3.
- Quarterfinals matches are Bo5.
- One map is vetoed by each player, the last remaining map is the first map.

Day 1 [showhide]

The opening day of the playoff provided for lots of highly entertaining series throughout the day.

Probe vs Snoxtar was the first match in the lineup and a birthday match for the Polish competitor, who pulled off a surprising strategy in Game 2. In Jagged Maw, a sneaking Imp built a Shroudstone tower on the high ground overlooking Probe’s natural expansion, sending the series into a third game.

Later, It was the Spanish brothers' turn to prove their skills, having both qualified via the leaderboard standings. The seasoned veterans wasted no time and finished their series 2-0 against up-and-coming Swedish player Bosse for VortiX and the experienced Brazilian Kelazhur for LucifroN.

Despite the overall factions ratio of the participants, all four quarterfinal matches were Infernal vs Vanguard affairs. Team Liquid's Elazer, one of the Katowice Qualified players, knocked out LucifroN in what is a must-watch almost reverse sweep series.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian youngster NightPhoenix came up against Kiwian, who not once but twice attempted a unique rush strategy against his Infernal opponent in Jagged Maw. Another young player, Clem, was three times bested by VortiX, who seemed in control of his matches all day, being one of only two players to have completed their series without a single map loss. The other was afterMath's recently acquired new talent: PartinG.

Day 2 [showhide]

The final day of the competition provided just as much excitement. Although many famous players were in the bracket, the protagonist role fell in the hands, or rather the jaws of Jagged Maw. A battlefield that demands constant action from minute one, as in every case today, players were quick to break through its center pillars and attempt to activate the siege camps for a devastating push unto their opponents.

For all other maps, the story was that of Doombringer and Gaunts, who made their way into players’ bases and wreaked havoc on the Luminite and Therium lines. This was a key element in PartinG’s series versus Kiwian, who, in game 3, went all in on his unorthodox Lancer opening and found himself in a base trade with an overleveraged position that, upon closer inspection, resulted in a loss for the highest placing Vanguard.

So intense was the aggression that in the first game of the finals, VortiX accidentally dropped his units outside of the map, causing a controversial game restart at first, though a later review provided him with the opening win in the finals versus PartinG.

From there, games 2 to 5 were standard but quicker affairs, with VortiX often tapping out early in his losses before a full engagement that was well on its way. The series would reach the 8th game before PartinG could wrestle the Maw down and get himself the first major win in Stormgate.
