The 2024 Esports World Cup is an ongoing multi-game tournament held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, hosted by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and ESL FACEIT Group. It is the first edition of the Esports World Cup, a tournament series announced in late 2023 as a rebranding and expansion of Gamers8. The tournament features competitions in 22 different games, including Dota 2, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, and more.
Each game has its own independent structure for qualifying, but the championship series for each title forms part of the Esports World Cup. Alongside the competitions in the games, there is a Club Competition across all games for participating organizations.
Events[edit]
Formation[edit]
The Esports World Cup was announced on October 23, 2023.[1] It would be an annual competition hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia starting in the summer of 2024. Featuring tournaments in a line-up of various games and genres, the EWC additionally features a "Club Competition" for esports organizations to compete across multiple games.
The Esports World Cup is a rebranding of the previously hosted Gamers8 series that initially ran since 2022, also in Riyadh.[2]
Club Program[edit]
On February 1st, 2024, the EWCF announced the Esports World Cup Club Program "designed to promote sustainable planning" for organizations. The EWCF initially announced that 28 organizations would participate; 22 via direct invitation and 6 via an open application process.[3] This was later expanded to 8 open applicant teams as the teams were announced on May 5th, 2024, totaling 30 partnered teams.[4]
Selected organizations are eligible for an annual six-figure payout to support their operations, as well as funding teams' entrances into featured titles at the Esports World Cup. These organizations are also able to gain financial rewards based on their performance in driving viewership and fan engagement to the event.[4]
Esports organizations applying through the open application first had to submit an application between February 1st and February 15th. Successful applications then had to pitch their submission to the Esports World Club committee.[5]
Being a part of the Club Support program does not guarantee participation in the EWC tournaments; teams still need to qualify for the Esports World Cup on their own merit.
Club Championship[edit]
A prizepool of $20,000,000 USD is awarded to the top 16 organizations in the Club Championship. With the winning team gaining $7,000,000 USD. Teams are awarded points in the overall ranking by finishing in the top 8 of a tournament, with a first place giving a 1000 points total. To win the Championship however, a team needs to also win at least 1 of the 23 tournaments. [6]
This Championship is open to all organizations competing in the EWC, regardless of if they are a part of the Club Program or not.
However, organizations had to declare a public roster entry prior to June 13, 2024 - 23:59 AST to be eligible for points in that respective game. The deadline was extended to June 27, 2024 - 23:59 AST specifically for Call of Duty events.
Prize Pool[edit]
The total prize pool of the tournament, including the individual game prize pools and Club Championship, is $60,000,000 USD.

- Teams must win at least one tournament to be eligible to win the Club Championship.
- Teams must finish top 8 at least two tournaments to be eligible for Club Championship rankings and prize pool.

Game Championship implications[edit]
In addition to the Prize Pool, several events will provide an impact towards a region's qualification into the game's respective World Championships. For 2024, four events contain the aforementioned bonuses:
Honor of Kings: Top 2 qualify for Honor of Kings Invitational Championship
Free Fire: Champion qualifies for Free Fire World Series Global Finals
PUBG Mobile: Champion grants their region an extra qualifying spot at the PUBG Mobile Global Championship
PUBG: Contains circuit points used to determine teams at the PUBG Global Championship

On April 21st, 2024 the Esports World Cup Twitter posted a video featuring the Las Vegas Sphere. In this video a list of teams was seen, which was later confirmed to be the teams part of the EWCF Club Support Program. [28][4]

Controversy[edit]
The Esports World Cup has been accused of sportswashing — using high-profile events to project a positive image around the world, to distract others from controversies such as human rights records. The Gamers8 event of 2023 drew sportwashing concerns over Saudi Arabia's human rights record,[30][31] and the 2024 event saw the controversy return,[32][33] with the New York Times noting parallels to Saudi Arabia's actions in other sports such as football and golf, with the Esports World Cup seen as the esports arm.[34] In 2023, in an interview with Fox News, Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, stated he "doesn't care" about accusations of sportswashing, as it was beneficial for Saudi Arabia's economy.[35]
In response to the concerns, Esports World Cup Foundation CEO Ralf Reichert, in an interview with the BBC, reassured LGBT fans and players over their safety, and promised no discrimination, although local norms and cultures had to be respected.[32]
Team Liquid, one of the largest esports organizations, chose to take part in the tournament, to use the event as a platform to show their support for LGBT people.[32] The previous year, Team Liquid had pledged $50,000 in donations to LGBTQ+ charity Rainbow Railroad in response to their team's participation in Riyadh Masters 2023, with CEO Victor Goossens stating that it would be difficult for the organization to attract and retain top talent if they refused to play in these events, but that they would stand by its values of diversity and inclusion, even during these events, and he personally had no issue calling out Saudi Arabia's human rights record.[36] For the 2024 event, Team Liquid announced that they would be wearing the Pride flag on their jerseys at events throughout the summer — including the Esports World Cup.[37][38] Goossens and fellow Team Liquid CEO Steve Arhancet also released lengthy statements discussing their decision to participate in the Esports World Cup.[39][40][41] Team Liquid's stance received both positive and negative reactions, including those from trans people in esports.[32]
Riot Games granted a license to host a League of Legends tournament at the Esports World Cup, despite having previously withdrawn their support for the Saudi NEOM project after criticism. Journalist Jacob Wolf reported that internal Riot Games feedback towards a hypothetical League of Legends event at the Esports World Cup was negative.[42] In response, interviewer Travis Gafford stated he would not cover nor watch the Esports World Cup, releasing a video to raise funds for Amnesty International in return.[43] FlyQuest, who qualified for the Esports World Cup, chose to let their players, coaches and staff members decide whether they would participate or not, and that they would support their decisions.[44] FlyQuest took part in the event in the end, finishing joint-last. Wolf estimated that $100m was spent on the League of Legends event alone.[45]
Within Overwatch, team Ex Oblivione announced they would take part in the qualifiers for the Esports World Cup, but would decline to play in Riyadh if they qualified.[46] Ex Oblivione did not qualify for the event. ENCE's Masaa, who did qualify, chose to drop out of the event, citing disagreements with Saudi Arabia's stance on LGBT rights and other moral issues.[47]
Rainbow Six shoutcaster Dezachu claimed that participating organizations at the Esports World Cup signed a legally-binding contract not to criticize the Esports World Cup, Saudi Arabia or its government, and were also contractually-obligated to tweet positive things about the event and produce promotional content.[48]
Separately, the Esports World Cup Foundation announced a partnership with the Esports Awards, where the awards ceremonies would be held in Riyadh. In light of this announcement, several people announced they would not be involved going forwards,[49] including Goldenboy,[50] a host for the Esports Awards and in multiple esports, and committee members Parker Mackay[51] and PGL CEO Silviu Stroie.[52]
